The year that Maz walked it off!
1960 Bill Mazeroski Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Uniform, MEARS
A10 & Mazeroski Letter -- Photo Matched to World Series Game
Five! When ESPN set out to identify the 100 greatest home runs
in Major League history, it was this man and this season that came
up at the number one position, the walk-off blast that made the
Pittsburgh Pirates the unlikely World Champions of 1960.
Mazeroski's shot over the left field wall at Forbes Field on
October 13, 1960 topped even Bobby Thomson's dramatic
pennant-winner nine years earlier, with Hank Aaron's 715th home run
in 1974 claiming the bronze medal in the rankings. While that monumental Mazeroski long ball was, of course, struck while wearing home white, this road grey ensemble ranks among the most desirable of post-war gamers for its derivation from that season for the ages, and its fine condition strongly suggests the uniform derives from a late-season shipment made expressly for Fall Classic wear at Yankee Stadium. That attribution is rendered ironclad by the discovery by Sports Investors Authentication of a photograph of Mazeroski wearing this jersey during the Pirates' Game Five at Yankee Stadium that put the Bucs one win away from the championship.
The distinctive vest format features "Pirates" in black-on-yellow font across chest, with number "9" on verso applied in the same two-tone felt. Collar and arm holes bear matching bumblebee striping. Interior collar holds "MacGregor size 44" maker's label, while the bottom of the interior button path supplies the delectable vintage with a tag announcing, "Set 1 1960."
Matching pants reveal "MacGregor size 34" label at interior waistband with another "Set 1 1960" flap tag nearby. White felt swatch affixed just below interior waistband at rear announces, "9 34 25." Both halves of the uniform are free of any staining, tears or moth holes, presenting in absolutely ideal condition for display. Finally, we have the awesome bumblebee striped wool stirrups, a small but rare addition that will ramp up the display quality of the uniform. A notarized signed letter from Mazeroski attesting that he personally removed this uniform, and his peerless home model, from his Forbes Field locker room after the 1960 World Series, is included. LOA from MEARS, A10. Notarized letter of provenance from Bill Mazeroski. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Photo match LOA from Sports Investors Authentication.
