Description
One of only five exemplars in the PSA population!
1923 Yankee Stadium Grand Opening Ticket Stub, PSA Poor 1.
It was the most beautiful ballpark in the world upon its grand
opening a century ago, and it will remain forever so in the heart
of every Yankees fan old enough to have spent time in The House
that Ruth Built. The flashy sequel that became the new home of the
Bronx Bombers in 2009 features every modern amenity that the old
structure lacked, but the greatest ghosts of Yankeedom will forever
inhabit the now-empty field next door where the original structure
once stood.Presented is one of the rarest and most important tickets in the history of baseball's greatest franchise, representing the ribbon-cutting contest of that inaugural season in the Bronx, the first of twenty-seven to end in World Series victory. Babe Ruth famously told reporters before that April 18, 1923 contest that, "I'd give a year of my life if I could hit a home run on Opening Day of this great new park," and his three-run shot in the bottom of the third inning would prove to be the game-winner in the 4-1 defeat of his former employers, the Boston Red Sox.
This was the largest crowd ever see a baseball game at the time, with paid attendance of 74,200 (and 30,000 patrons turned away at the gates). Despite these numbers, only five tickets appear in the PSA population--each a stub--with two grading "Authentic" and the others grading Good 2 (with one of that pair bearing a condition qualifier). Creasing accounts for the Poor 1 grade here, but, while the assessment is technically accurate, our catalog imagery should demonstrate that the creasing is only apparent upon close inspection, leaving the relic to present far more impressively than its grade level might suggest. But, certainly, the elite significance and rarity of this piece renders any condition complaints absurd. Encapsulated by PSA, Poor 1.
