Description

The image used for the first card in the 1953 Topps Baseball set!

1951 Jackie Robinson Signed Original Photograph by Barney Stein, PSA/DNA Auto Mint 9 & Type 1. For the last two decades of the Dodgers' residency in Brooklyn, Barney Stein served faithfully as the team's official photographer, capturing a generation of heartbreak and triumph, culminating in the greatest heartbreak of all as the team left the Big Apple and Mr. Stein behind for a new life in La-La Land. An annual task for Stein was the creation of player portraits for various publications issued by the team, and this is perhaps the most famous of the hundreds bearing the Stein imprimatur. If the photo stirs a strong feeling of deja vu, there's a good reason for that, as this is the image that Brooklyn-based trading card company Topps selected as the number one card in their 1953 set, a powerful sequel to their celebrated debut.

Veteran collectors are aware that Type 1 photos utilized for trading cards has been a red-hot collecting subset for a few years now, but those collectors will have to go to battle with the many devotees of Stein's celebrated work, and, of course, those concentrating in autographed photography.

Printed to 10x8" dimensions and presenting as close to NRMT as any septuagenarian photograph we've ever encountered, this crystal-clear image is inscribed in 9/10 blue ink, "Best wishes Harold, Jackie Robinson." While we have no specific knowledge of the provenance of the piece, it is an interesting point of intrigue that Robinson's best buddy on the Dodgers, Pee Wee Reese, was named Harold. Verso bears a Dodgers team ownership stamp and a handwritten identifier in pencil. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA Auto Mint 9, Type 1.
