Description

More than three times as rare as an unsigned PSA Gem Mint 10!

Signed 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan Rookie #57 PSA NM 7, PSA/DNA Auto 8. Not since the fabled "Tall Boys" of the 1969-70 Topps issue has a basketball issue boasted such a remarkable assembly of rookie talent, highlighted, of course, by the number fifty-seven card dedicated to the iconic Michael Jordan. He may have retired two decades ago, but like his baseball counterpart, Babe Ruth, His Airness will always remain an immortal and an absolutely essential part of any collection focused upon the sport he dominated.

Jordan has never been known as a generous signer and knowledgeable collectors will tell you that he's tightened the reins significantly over the past decade or so, and rumors abound that he will unfailingly refuse to autograph trading cards, presumably a condition of his contract with Upper Deck. Long story short, the population of signed rookies isn't likely to grow.

Another point worthy of mention is that Jordan rookies presented to the subject for signing generally fall into a more modest condition range--hardly surprising, since unsigned examples in strong grades are quite pricey. Today, unsigned representations at the PSA NM 7 level command a price north of $5,000. Of the ninety-six signed examples currently appearing in the PSA population report, only nineteen grade higher than this well-centered specimen. And, while most collectors of signed cardboard are already aware, we'll report that the autograph grades themselves are not part of the census, so we can't say what percentage meet or surpass the Auto 8 assessment of this beauty.

But we can be certain of this--autographed examples of this card are more than three times as scarce as unsigned examples graded PSA Gem Mint 10, so this remains a comparatively undervalued asset from a purely mathematical standpoint. It will be interesting to see if this Platinum Night event starts to narrow the gap for this PSA NM 7 Auto 8 rarity.
