Description
Only one superior!
1968 Topps Nolan Ryan Rookie #177 PSA Mint 9. In a word,
Nolan Ryan was "durable." He was a Hall of Fame righthander who put
together one of the most impressive pitching résumés in the annals
of Major League Baseball history. Consistently rearing back and
throwing 95-mile-per-hour fastballs for 27 long seasons, "The Ryan
Express" rang up 324 victories and fanned a league-high 5,714
batters along the way. Oh, and did we mention his MLB-best seven
no-hitters? But despite all of his eye-popping accomplishments, he
was never named a Cy Young Award winner. Despite pitching in both
the National and American leagues for four different teams during
his near-three-decade tenure, he never walked away with pitching's
coveted honor. Incredibly, even his 1973 campaign for the
then-California Angels in which he won 21 games, pitched 26
complete games and struck out a league-high 383 batters wasn't good
enough for the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Regardless, Ryan will always be remembered as one of the toughest
and sturdiest hurlers ever. His well-deserved election to the
Baseball Hall of Fame took place in 1999 when he went in as a
first-ballot inductee.Offered is an extremely well-preserved, high-grade example of Ryan's prized 1968 Topps rookie card, which he shares the spotlight with fellow Mets pitcher Jerry Koosman, an excellent lefthander. This specific example of card #177 from the '68 Topps series is in elite company and boasts all the best qualities a card can offer: outstanding, rich color, spot-on centering, unchipped colored borders, four razor-sharp corners, and a reverse that looks like it could have been printed yesterday. But just like the elusive Cy Young Award that always eluded Ryan, this tip-top specimen of his coveted rookie card somehow did not earn a Gem Mint grade. Graded PSA Mint 9 with an MBA Gold Diamond certification. Of the nearly 18,000 examples found in the PSA Pop Report, this is one of only 68 cards graded MINT with just one rated higher.
