Description
A King is born
1954 Topps Hank Aaron #128 SGC 88 NM/MT 8. One of the hobby's most important post-war cards first circulated with little fanfare in the middle of the now classic 1954 Topps baseball series. Although Aaron's remarkable 755 career home run total was surpassed, his status in baseball history as a member of baseball royalty is secured, as no asterisk will ever be associated with his accomplishments. Though Aaron's own assumption of the home run crown came more than a quarter century after Jackie Robinson broke the color line, Hammerin' Hank was forced to endure same racist taunts to death threats as he reeled in the Babe.Dodgers announcer Vin Scully celebrated the scene when Aaron finally claimed the throne: "What a marvelous moment for baseball, what a marvelous moment for Atlanta and the state of Georgia, what a marvelous moment for the country and the world. A black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol."
Graded SGC 88 NM/MT 8. One of eleven rated NM/MT 88 by SGC, eleven have graded higher. This gorgeous slab of cardboard finds the young former Negro Leaguer at the start of that long march toward immortality. This card exhibits all of the attributes a card graded NM-MT should have - bright and vibrant colors, a consistent layer of fresh, shiny gloss, close to perfect centering, accurate print registration plus an almost complete lack of any edge, surface and corner tip wear. All combine to elevate this special representation to the upper reaches of the SGC population report.
