Description
Population six, two superior!
1911 T3 Turkey Red Ty Cobb #9 Checklist Back PSA EX-MT 6.
Feared by most, but respected by all, Tyrus Raymond Cobb was the
Machiavellian ideal of the early game, forging his Cooperstown
bronze in the fires of natural ability and gritted-teeth
determination. Though Cobb's staggering career hits tally of 4,191
was ultimately eclipsed, many batting records remain in the Georgia
Peach's sole possession to this day, most notably the .366 career
batting average. We find the fire-breathing legend maintaining his notorious fierce countenance here, a sharp contrast to the idyllic sunset that plays out behind him. Many consider the Turkey Reds to be the most beautiful trading cards issued during the twentieth century, and the offered specimen provides strong evidence in support of the claim, the realistic artwork capturing the subject giving way to an impressionistic background that reminds the viewer of Claude Monet's best work at Giverny.
The production year of this oversized commemorative, available only through the mail via cigarette pack coupon redemption, finds the master in his prime, in year five of an unbroken nine-season chain of American League batting championships. In 1911 he'd do the best work of his entire career, earning his sole American League MVP with league-topping tallies for average (.419), runs (148), hits (248), doubles (47), triples (24), runs batted in (127) and even stolen bases (83).
If you're looking at our online images and thinking the card presents considerably better than its technical grade, you'll have plenty of company in that opinion. The obverse could stand shoulder to shoulder with any NM-MT 8 example without looking out of place. We suspect it is the very minor dampstaining at lower edge of obverse that accounts for the bulk of points lost, and you'll really have to go looking for that tiny imperfection to find it. Graded PSA EX-MT 6.
