1888 N162 Goodwin Champions King Kelly PSA NM-MT 8. Mike
"King" Kelly was baseball's first true celebrity, dazzling
19th-century fans with brilliance and bravado. A star for the
Chicago White Stockings and Boston Beaneaters, he pioneered
aggressive base running and strategic innovation, including the
hit-and-run. Dubbed the "$10,000 Beauty," he was also a vaudeville
performer and author of baseball's first autobiography. Kelly
inspired the hit song "Slide, Kelly, Slide" and famously recited
"Casey at the Bat" on stage. His flair for showmanship and
rule-bending made him a legend. Though he died young, Kelly's 1945
Hall of Fame induction sealed his place as one of the game's
original icons.The subject card finds the two-time National League batting champion engaged in his second season in Boston, where he produced the team's highest batting average (.318) and shared a battery on the defensive side with Hall of Fame pitchers John Clarkson and Old Hoss Radbourne. This was a trading card era renowned for its artistry and we see the reason why in the glorious image of the handsome subject, set against a vista of clouds. Verso lists the full roster of subjects in the fifty-card multi-sport issue that likewise includes such legendary figures as Cap Anson, John L. Sullivan and Buffalo Bill Cody.
Just seventy-two examples of this card appear in a PSA slab at the time of this writing, and the subject card shares supremacy over that population with just three other examples. Graded PSA NM-MT 8.
