Description

1886 N167 Old Judge Beautiful Woman (Unknown) SGC 40 VG 3. The masses will think of the comprehensive N172 Old Judge baseball player cards issued from 1887 through 1890. Most will erroneously think they are the first baseball cards ever produced. Goodwin & Co. produced a set of insert cards the year prior, in 1886, which are truly the first series of American insert cards. Subjects include players from the New York Giants, a pugilist and actresses. No mere afterthought to sell tobacco, the illustrations are professional and elegant, the printing is top quality and the work of Giles Litho Co. of New York & Boston. The set presents a modest selection but are nothing short of a formidable task should one attempt to acquire one of each of the nineteen known actresses, three boxer and twelve baseball players. Found in two sizes, each one of the eight cards in this auction measure 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" with black & white portraits and reverse vertical ads for either "Old Judge Cigarettes" or "Gypsy Queen Cigarettes." As far as we have been able to discover, these eight cards are the largest group offered in one auction.

Our offered card is titled "Unknown" and is graded SGC 40 VG 3 with far nicer presentation value. One of only nine total examples graded by SGC.
