Description
1937 Rogers Hornsby Single Signed & Inscribed Baseball with Provenance. The perfect baseball hitting machine, Rogers Hornsby authored the greatest five-year run in baseball history, batting .402 with a .474 on base percentage and a .690 slugging average. During that span he also won five batting titles and two Triple Crowns.The Rajah's exceptional ability at the plate and his ability to successfully disseminate that knowledge to young hitters made him, along with Lefty O'Doul, the best hitting instructors of their time. Hornsby also had a genuine fondness for children which led him to become involved with many youth baseball programs, including the Ray Doan Baseball School (where he taught form 1933-38) and the Rogers Hornsby Baseball School (in the 1940's), both in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
While he was an instructor at the Doan, the Hall of Famer inscribed and signed the exemplar on offer here to a young University of Illinois graduate who had been assigned as a trainer at the school. It reads: "Best Wishes To Homer Cole From Rogers Hornsby" in black steel-tip fountain pen. The "Official League Doans Baseball School" sphere has browned a bit over the years but the autograph grades an 8.5/10 in strength and both present marvelously.
