Description

1971 Al Kaline Signed Detroit Tigers Player's Contract & Copy of Replacement Contract Requesting a Lower Salary from The Al Kaline Collection.

"I think the simple fact is that my father came from an humble beginnings and was able to play the game he loved as a paying career. He always felt the game, and the Detroit Tigers organization, gave him far more than he gave them in return." -- Mark Kaline

A couple months after the conclusion of the 1970 season, the Tigers' management came to Al Kaline with their offer to make him the first $100,000 player in the franchise's history. As Al's son Mark recounted, his father originally signed the $100,000 contract, on December 16, 1970, but then stewed about the decision over the holidays, before finally calling up the club to demand a reduction. "I'd prefer to get that much money when I rate it," he ultimately told them, then proceeded to rejoin the top ten for batting average in 1971, only then accepting the $100,000 annual salary for 1972. Only a man of true character would make such a request.

This special lot documents that noble "take no charity" mindset that made Al Kaline one of the most respected figures in Major League history. We have both the original $100,000 contract, hand signed by "Albert W. Kaline" and Tigers general manager James A. Campbell, and a photocopy of the replacement contract, dated January 11, 1971 for $93,000. Each is six-pages in length and free of any condition issues beyond storage folds. Letter of provenance from Mark Kaline. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
