Description

1988 Michael Jordan Signed Nike Air Alpha Force Sneaker. One of the more interesting non-signature/non-Jordan brand ripples in the Jordan sneaker catalog, the Nike Air Alpha Force was designed by Tinker Hatfield and worn by Mike for at least two games before (versus the Knicks) and after (versus the Bucks) the 1988 All-Star Game in Chicago when he debuted the Nike Air Jordan III's. In those two instances, the silhouettes included a white/red/black colorway with red Swooshes.

Some have suggested that Jordan went rogue with the Tinker Hatfield designed Air Alpha Force as a way of showing his displeasure with the Air Jordan I and II designed by Peter Moore and Bruce Kilgore. This theory seems to carry some weight when considering that Tinker Hatfield took over the reins on the Air Jordan III through XV.

The single right sneaker offered here sports a white/cement grey/black colorway with "Air Alpha Force" on the tongue, "Nike" Velcro strap above the toebox, and "Nike Air" on the heel. Furthermore, the toebox is inscribed and signed "To Gene, Michael Jordan" in 9/10 vintage black sharpie.

As is quite typical of many sneakers from this period, the polyurethane composite which comprised the midsoles degraded substantially over time, thanks to dydrolysis and oxidation. This has resulted in separation between the midsoles and uppers and cause pieces of the composite to become disengaged, which is fully visible in the online images. Also, a hand-check will find typical crumbling on the inner ankle polyurethane foam padding.

However, despite the condition concerns and the fact Mike did not wear these silhouettes in a game, their place in the Jordan Shoeniverse, coupled with the long format autograph still make them a desired collectible. Full LOA from Beckett Authentication Services. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
