Description
1978-79 Bobby Jones Game Worn Philadelphia 76ers Jersey. Dr. J called him "vice president" and "all that is right and good in the NBA." Chocolate Thunder called him "White Lightning" and "the baddest white dude in the NBA." Fans loved him, writers admired him, and his opponents called him "virtuous." He refused to curse, wouldn't cheat, always pointed to the teammate who gave him as assist, and always raised his hand when he was called for a foul.Quiet, selfless, and unselfish to a fault, he was talented enough to do everything on his own (and boost his stats in the process), but instead chose to do everything within the framework of the team because the only stat that ever mattered to Bobby Jones was the final score.
Offensively he was an ambidextrous high percentage shooter (.550 lifetime!) with an accurate jumper and a strong drive who never stopped moving without the ball; an adept passer who always looked for the open man before he looked for his own shot; and a thoroughbred in the open court who possessed exceptional leaping ability and an affinity for finishing with authority.
Defensively he was both a great one-on-one and team defender, who always played the opponent's top guns. A suffocating push-up defender, he could guards bigs and smalls alike, both in the paint and on the perimeter. He always hustled and never took a night off.
An All-American at North Carolina who was chosen with the fifth pick of the 1974 draft, Bobby Jones was an eleven-time All-Defensive Team selection, five-time All-Star, and the NBA Sixth Man of the Year in 1983 when his 76ers captured the NBA championship.
Bobby's blue mesh gamer offered here displays "Sixers 24" on the front and "B. Jones 24" on the verso, all sewn-on in white and red tackle twill. Red/white/blue trim adorns the collar and arm openings and there are two tags in the tail: "Wilson 42," and extra length flap tag. The jersey exhibits solid wear, and it is one of the fanciest styles in Philly history.
Bobby Jones was rightfully elected to the Basketball Hall of Fane on April 6, 2019. It's always been a mystery why Jones wasn't elected earlier when one considers the entire scope of his career and the many facets of his game and character. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
