Description
1974-76 Spirits of St. Louis Game Worn Warm-Up Jacket. The Spirits of St. Louis were only in existence for two seasons, but during that short time they featured some of the game biggest stars (Moses Malone, Maurice Lucas), most unforgettable characters (Marvin Barnes, Fly Williams), and one of the greatest uniform designs ever unleased on a professional basketball court. This flaming orange knit displays a four-snap front, three-snap v-shaped "dentist style" collar, and silver braid trim (collar, button path, waist, and sleeve cuffs). Best of all is the elaborate, oversized "Spirits of St. Louis" logo on the back which features a Charles Lindbergh airplane motif, all sewn-on in silver spackle on black tackle twill.
The interior button path houses two tags: a "Rawlings 42" manufacturer's label and a "1" Longer" swatch. The team did not stitch in the player identifiers, but rather wrote them in by hand. This exemplar does not indicate a player number but, based on the size, it was mostly used by a guard. The team had eighteen players on their roster for each of their two seasons so late arrivals were sometimes not marked for player identification. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
