Description

1960's Henry Cooper Fight Worn Robe with Newspaper Clipping Photo Match. He's one of just four men to send Ali to the canvas (though the fourth, by Chuck Wepner, is now universally considered a refereeing error for a slip), and the only boxer to earn knighthood from the British royal family. Sir Henry's light defense/heavy offense style made him a superstar throughout the British Isles and the rest of the European continent, and his resume includes such storied figures as Ingemar Johansson, Floyd Patterson, Zora Folley, Brian London, Joe Bugner and, of course, two meetings with Muhammad Ali.

It's a sad reality that little film or photographic documentation of Cooper's pre and post-fight escapades exist today, complicating the search for a specific fight attribution, though the strong wear suggests this blue and white satin robe was donned on multiple occasions, and a November 13, 1970 clipping from the "Monmouthshire (UK) Beacon" features an image of Cooper posing with this robe. "Henry Cooper" is applied to rear in distinctive white satin font, while interior collar bears the maker's label of "Lillywhite's," headquartered in London's Piccadilly Circus. Thigh-length garment exhibits a few scattered points of toning, but nothing that undermines the beauty of this rare survivor.

Note: The aforementioned newspaper clipping will be included with the lot. Letter of provenance from Troy Kinunen. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
