Description

1915 Cracker Jack Frederick Merkle #78 PSA NM-MT 8 - None Higher. There are truly some great nicknames in baseball. One of the more unfortunate ones though belongs to Fred Merkle. We are sure Merkle wanted baseball immortality like all players want achieved it not in the way he intended. "Bonehead" was from a fateful day in 1908 when a 19-year old Merkle failed to touch second base (he went into the dugout instead) thinking the game was over as it was two-outs in the bottom of the ninth and another runner had just scored. The game ended in a tie, so did the first place Giants and Cubs that year. The tie-breaker was won by the Cubs giving them the '08 pennant. Graded PSA NM-MT 8. One of sixteen in NM-MT. None have rated higher.
