1934-36 Diamond Stars Lefty Grove (1935 Green) #1 PSA NM-MT 8 - None Higher. Lefty Grove was a superstar southpaw who was a key ingredient in Connie Mack's second great Athletics dynasty in the late 1920's and early 1930's. The original owner must have been a Yankees fan as the desire to flaunt this card that appeared the season after the future Hall of Fame southpaw repeated his Pitching Triple Crown performance in 1931 with American League-topping tallies in victories (a career-best 31), earned run average (a career-low 2.06) and strike outs (175), while his Philadelphia Athletics claimed its third-straight American League pennant but would be traded after the 1933 season to Boston. A pitcher that had both power and skills, Grove was one of those pitchers that could beat you either way. These talents would serve him well as he complied exactly 300 victories and nine ERA titles in his 17-year career. From 1927 to 1933 Grove posted at least 20 victories (31 wins in 1931) so it was no surprise seeing him as the #1 spot in a card series titled "Diamond Stars." An irony considering his 1934 would be his least successful of his career up until that time. National Chicle really hit back at the Goudey portion of the card market with this wonderfully illustrated series in 1934 and saw fit to produce updates in 1935 and 1936 but never reaching the as advertised 240 subjects. By 1935, it was almost - Goudey? Goudey who? We know there are two versions of this card. Both have backs printed in Green and carry a 1934 copyright date. The reference to his stats from 1934 confirms to us that this is the card first saw circulation in 1935. Card #'s 1-24 were issued in less quantity in 1935 as they were simply a re-issue.Graded PSA NM-MT 8. One of seven graded NM-MT with none graded higher. As one should except, there are four high quality corners showing slight amounts of wear. The surfaces have mild toning after eighty years. The richly colored portrait is a site to behold. For a landmark promotion, there is no finer way to start off your treasured set. That is confirmed by the PSA census.
