Only three superior!

1933 Sport Kings Babe Ruth #2 PSA NM-MT 8. Just months after launching the most famous home run of his storied career in the 1932 World Series--the apocryphal "Called Shot"--the Babe appeared as the second card in the Goudey company's Sport Kings issue, celebrating the period's leading practitioners of baseball, football, hockey, boxing and more. The forty-eight card set, and the Goudey Baseball issue released the same year, represented a particularly optimistic and daring venture for the Boston-based company in its historical context. By 1933, nearly half of America's banks had failed, and unemployment stood as a devastating twenty-five to thirty percent, hardly an age conducive to the debut of such non-essential items as trading cards.

But Goudey's hopeful enterprise proved successful nonetheless, earning a place in the pantheon of the collecting hobby, particularly those cards bearing the likeness of America's most famous athlete. We find a spectacular example thereof in this lot, the most realistic portrait of Ruth within the Goudey breed, a man primed to yet again stamp his name indelibly into the sport's record books with the first All-Star Game home run in July of that year.

The vast majority of surviving Goudey cards have suffered the slings and arrows of the aging process, but this specimen bucks the trend delightfully, supplying only the faint hints of corner touches to document its long journey from its wax pack to PSA slab. In nearly five hundred submissions to the hobby's leading service, the population of superior examples matches Ruth's jersey number retired in Monument Park. None of that trio has seen the hobby's major auction block in over a decade.
