Description

1888 A16 Allen & Ginter "Album of Worlds Champions." The majestic Victorian-era artistry of the trading cards issued by this Richmond, Virginia tobacconist define the way many of us see 19th century athletics in our mind's eye. This gorgeous volume's twelve pages and its front and back covers comprise the very scarce, lithographed souvenir album for Allen & Ginter's 1st Series of World's Champions cards. The 6x8" pages reproduce to all fifty images from the N28 tobacco insert set-including such legendary early baseball players as Cap Anson, John Clarkson, Charles Comiskey, Tim Keefe, King Kelly and John Ward and other noteworthy sporting figures like bare-knuckle Champ John L. Sullivan and celebrated sharpshooter Annie Oakley. Still bound by the original string, the covers and pages show only mild handling wear for its advanced age, and colors remain bright and vibrant. Surely one of the finest examples of this scarce book in existence today.
