Description
1959 Ryne Duren Game Worn Jersey. Legend is that Duren became a Yankee because the boys in the Bronx were terrified to have to face him themselves. Armed with the lethal combination of both the strongest arm and the worst eyesight in the game, Duren made batters' entire lives flash before their eyes every time one of his fastballs did. "Listen, we're married guys with kids," Gil McDougald announced to Casey Stengel following a harrowing strike out. "That guy's throwing it over 100 miles an hour out there. You'd better get him over here, or get him out of the league!" And so this home white flannel pinstripe was issued to the wild and wooly Duren for his second tour of duty at Yankee Stadium, and shows fine wear from a season that saw him earn a 1.88 ERA and an All-Star nod as one of the American League's top closers. Classic "NY" is in blue felt over the heart, with number "26" on verso. A couple of team repairs are evident on the jersey back, and the embroidered swatch reading "Duren" in the collar has been lightly restored. "Spalding [size] 46" tagging in front of tail rises above an embroidered "59;" washing instructions tag is inside tail. LOA from Dan Knoll & Dave Bushing/ SCD Authentic.Auction Info
