Description

1957 Roy Campanella Game Worn Pants. From the same source that provided the incredible 1958 Duke Snider game worn jersey presented within this auction comes this important garment worn by the tragic Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Fame catcher in what would prove to be his final season in baseball. Considering the fact that players of this era were issued just two home and two road uniforms, and that the Dodgers played their final game as representatives of Brooklyn at Philadelphia's Shibe Park, one can conclude that there is a 50-50 chance that these pants were the last ever worn by Campy in competition. The grey flannel pants exhibit fantastic wear, with heavy pilling in the crotch one will see on any starting catcher's pants during the flannel era. Some of the blue piping at the outseams has come loose, but to no major visual detriment. The interior waistband is tagged with the proper "Spalding" label and Dry Cleaning tag. with the felt swatch below embroidered "Campanella" in blue thread showing tremendous wear but still hanging on by a thread. The "Set 1 1957" year flap tag is affixed at interior front waistband. The double heartbreak for Brooklynites of losing both their beloved Bums and their superstar catcher following the 1957 season remains among the most poignant in sports history, while Campy's reaction to his misfortune remains one of the most inspiring. As such, these pants should occupy a place of honor in even the finest of private collections. LOA from Lou Lampson.
