Description

1940 Canadian Open Championship Gold Medal Won by Sam Snead. Newlywed Snead turned this excursion north of the border into a honeymoon for himself and bride Audrey Karns, claiming the second of three career Canadian Open titles to brighten even further the happy mood. Snead was particularly dominant in this tournament, winning three times in a four-year span, this victory coming in the form of a single-shot playoff defeat of Jug McSpadden, best remembered as the first pro golfer to shoot a fifty-nine on a par 71 course (at Brackenridge Park Golf Club, San Antonio, TX, 1939).

This playing of the Canadian Open was the first of four (1940, 1947, 1953, 1963) contested at the Scarboro Golf and Country Club in eastern Toronto, rated one of the nation's top courses. Snead's victory here, his eighteenth of eighty-two career PGA Tour wins, was rewarded with the presented medal, featuring the logo of the Royal Canadian Golf Association on obverse and text on verso announcing, "Royal Canadian Golf Association Open Championship, Sam Snead, 1940." Maker's mark at bottom edge of verso reads, "Birks 18K."

Medal measures 1.25" in diameter, in fine condition. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
