Description
1939 The Masters Runner-Up Silver Tray Won by Sam Snead. After twice falling just short with second place finishes in 1937 and 1938, Ralph Guldahl finally conquered the entire field at Augusta to earn his sole Masters Championship in 1939, the sixth edition of the famous tournament at Augusta. This time it was Sam Snead who claimed Guldahl's customary runner-up position, just a stroke behind the Texan's nine-under par 279. It would be another decade before Snead would claim his first of three Masters victories.For this near-miss the twenty-seven year old Snead earned an $800 purse and the impressive silver tray presented here, a prize presented retroactively some years later, as such items were not available at the time of the contest. It is important to stress that this is indeed Mr. Snead's one and only trophy for the 1939 tournament, a masterfully engraved sterling silver creation hallmarked by Garrard & Co. Ltd. of England. A splendid image of the Augusta clubhouse dominates the aesthetics along with the club logo and the words, "Masters Tournament, Sam Snead, Runner Up, 1939." The 10x10" footed tray exhibits no condition problems, unchanged from its date of presentation. Letter of provenance from Jack Snead.
