1960 Roberto Clemente Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Jersey, SGC Excellent & Photo Matched!

UPDATE: PSA has likewise photo matched this jersey to August 25, 1960.

While his teammate and fellow future Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski produced the most important swing of the 1960 season, the Game Seven walk-off World Championship clincher, it was Clemente who led the Steeltown sluggers with an .815 OPS during the Pirates' successful hunt for the National League pennant that preceded that thrilling Fall Classic. Clemente's power numbers skyrocketed during this hugely consequential campaign, quadrupling the previous season's home run tally while nearly doubling his RBI count. He'd earn his first and second of fifteen All-Star nods in 1960 and his first of eight top-ten finishes in National League MVP balloting.

We've always loved these flannel vests that the Bucs sported between 1957 and 1969, but the Championship caliber of this particular specimen elevates it above its beautiful brethren. The black and yellow color palette adopted by all top-tier Pittsburgh professional sports teams announces "Pirates" across chest and the long-retired number "21" on verso. Close inspection reveals some restoration to these identifiers, which had begun to come loose at several spots along the perimeters. The experts at SGC also note that the buttons are not original but confirm that they are correct for the manufacturer and vintage. They also note some replacement of the collar soutache, likewise with material faithful to the original.

Interior collar bears "MacGregor size 42" tagging, while lower front interior button path provides embroidered "60" swatch that anchors a "Set 2 1960" flap tag. Game wear is consistent with a full season's action, and the absence of any distracting tears or staining to the jersey body result in a brilliant showpiece.

Beyond the perfect fidelity to known exemplars, the authenticity of the jersey is rendered ironclad by the included paperwork from Sports Investors Authentication and another service that finds Clemente sporting this shirt at Wrigley Field on August 25, 1960. Clemente would single home the Pirates' only run in a 2-1 defeat, a game that would end (in a reverse foreshadowing of the World Series) with a walk-off home run by Chicago Cubs pitcher Glen Hobbie with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.

No clear photographic documentation exists (at present) for postseason wear, but it's certainly within the realm of possibility that Clemente donned this jersey during the World Series in the only games he ever played upon the hallowed grounds of Yankee Stadium. A monumentally important jersey that marks a transformative season for both Clemente and the team he so nobly represented for eighteen years. LOA from SGC, Excellent.
