Description

1785 Benjamin Franklin Signed Land Purchase Document. With the Treaty of Paris of 1783 officially ending the Revolutionary War and granting hard-fought independence to the thirteen former colonies of England, the industrious Founding Father Benjamin Franklin returned from his diplomatic duties in France to serve as the president of the Supreme Executive Council of Philadelphia (1785-88). It is in this capacity that Franklin applies his 8/10 black ink signature to the left margin of this vellum document validating a land deal in his home state of Pennsylvania.

Balance of text is written in an unknown hand as is typical of such documents. It is counter-signed by John Armstrong, Jr. as Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (5/10). Document measures 13.5x14". Creasing and toning is apparent in our lot photography, which should indicate that the piece is not significantly diminished in appearance by these faults. Franklin's rare autograph remains the strongest text on the piece. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
