Description

1939 Hillerich & Bradsby Large Advertising Sign. Extraordinary marketing piece is the first of its kind we've ever encountered, matching that extreme scarcity with glorious graphics and remarkably fine condition. Issued by the famed Louisville, Kentucky bat manufacturer which has served for the past century as the Major Leagues' primary supplier, the sign proudly recounts the considerable cross section of early Cooperstown honorees and devotees of Hillerich & Bradsby lumber. Inaugural class members Cobb, Collins, Sisler, Wagner, Ruth, Lajoie and Speaker are pictured in photographic vignettes, as is the tragic Lou Gehrig who was inducted by special ballot in 1939 soon after his retirement. Twelve other baseball luminaries whose bronze plaques were present at the grand opening of the Hall of Fame are noted at center. The 22x29" sign presents only the slightest edge and surface wear to suggest seven decades of existence, easily assuring itself a place in the top percentile of period advertising pieces of any kind. Original easel back is in unused state on verso. To locate another example is highly unlikely. To locate a finer example, simply impossible.
