Description

1983 NCAA Basketball Houston Cougars (Phi Slama Jama) Finalist Ring (Media Information Director). The 1983 Houston Cougars men's basketball team, coached by Guy V. Lewis, was one of the most iconic squads in college basketball history. Known for their fast-paced, high-flying style of play dubbed "Phi Slama Jama," the team was led by future Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler. They finished the season with a 31-3 record and reached the NCAA Championship Game. The Cougars dominated opponents with athleticism and relentless defense, with Olajuwon earning the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award. In the national title game, they faced North Carolina State in a historic upset, losing 54-52 on a last-second dunk. Despite the heartbreaking finish, the 1983 Cougars are remembered as one of the most electrifying and influential teams in college basketball history.

This is the first ring we've encountered from that legendary collegiate crew, issued to Jay Goldberg as media information director for the team. Ring face announces "1983 NCAA National Finalist," while shanks identified the University of Houston as SWC Champs and Goldberg as the recipient. Interior band is stamped, "LGB 10K" and measures to a size eight and a half (8.5). Weight is twenty-seven grams (27 g.). Light wear, no box. Notarized letter of provenance from widow of recipient.
