Description

1981 Muhammad Ali Training Worn Robe for Trevor Berbick Bout with Letter of Provenance & LOA from Craig Hamilton. This vintage hooded terrycloth robe with waist pockets and belt was worn by the aging legend in training for his ill-advised meetings with Trevor Berbick. Large rectangular "Everlast" label (faded) on the left chest gives way to a large "Muhammad Ali" on the back, all identifiers applied in soft black felt heat transfers. The robe is thigh length and exhibits a fair amount of soiling from perspiration around the collar.

Letter of provenance from boxing matchmaker worker Eric Bottjer details how Ali's assistant trainer Drew Bundini Brown gave the robe to former lightweight champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad in 1981, after a training session for the Berbick fight, who subsequently gave it to him in 2002.

Joining Bottjer's letter of provenance is an LOA from renowned fight memorabilia expert Craig Hamilton. This important relic from the sunset of a legendary career reads as both an inspiration and a cautionary tale. Letter of provenance from Eric Bottjer. LOA from Craig Hamilton. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
