Description

1969 Roberto Clemente Game Worn Pittsburgh Pirates Pants. He lived a hero of Pittsburgh and died a hero of Nicaragua, his body forever lost at sea following the crash of his overloaded earthquake relief plane in the coastal waters of his native Puerto Rico. Already guaranteed baseball immortality through his eighteen brilliant seasons of Major League service and his newly-minted key to the 3,000 Hit Clubhouse, Roberto Clemente achieved the closest thing to baseball sainthood that tragic last day of 1972, assuring that any artifact once blessed by his touch would be held in the highest of collecting esteem.

Presented is a rare opportunity for ownership of a genuine Clemente uniform piece in an age when his few known jerseys are trading hands at prices exceeding $50,000. The grey flannel roadster pants exhibit solid wear from a season that saw Clemente bat an outstanding .345 and earn his ninth of twelve consecutive Gold Glove Awards. Interior waistband holds proper "Spalding" and washing instructions tagging, with the all-important embroidered "Clemente 21 34 25" swatch trailing a "Set 1 1969" flag tag. Hand markered name and number at interior waistband suggests secondary usage at the minor league level. Cooperstown-quality flannel from one of the most noble practitioners of our National Pastime. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
