Description
1949 Warren Spahn Game Worn Boston Braves Jersey. When it's got the looks and the personality, it has to be true love. The Braves' uniform style of the 1940's and 1950's is widely considered the pinnacle of post-war baseball fashion, and it would take quite the litigator to defend a dissenting opinion. While the Cleveland Indians' cartoonish Chief Wahoo has rightfully earned its share of scorn from an offended Native American community, the gorgeous aesthetics of these Braves uniforms play like a loving homage. There is no wink and nod here, just heroic imagery and expert craftsmanship .The red and black felt scripted "Braves" ascends gently upon the chest across the zippered front, transversing the stylish red and black piping that is repeated at each sleeve cuff. The tomahawk below the team nickname is a complicated interplay of chenille and felt. Even more luxurious is the Indian head on the left sleeve, crafted from five colors of felt and remarkably detailed threadwork. The red and black number "21" on verso is perhaps the most common aspect of the shirt, though no longer common on Braves jerseys, of course, as the team properly retired the digits in Spahn's honor. A simple "Horace Partridge Athletic Goods [size] 42" tag appears at interior collar above a swatch embroidered "Spahn" in red. A similar swatch at lower right exterior tail denotes the year "49." The jersey is signed once in 9+/10 blue sharpie at the left ribs, and again somewhat more lightly at interior collar.
The jersey exhibits use characterized by the experts at MEARS as "moderate to heavy," indicative of a season that would prove to be one of Spahn's most active and accomplished, with National League-leading totals in victories (21), complete games (25) innings pitched (302.1) and strikeouts (151).
MEARS calculates its grade as A8.5, with a single point lost for the repaired zipper (a common theme among Braves jerseys of this era) and a half-point for the minimal separation of the felt of the numeral "2" on verso. In every other regard physically, aesthetically and historically, the jersey earns top marks and a position of honor in the finest of private game worn jersey collections. LOA from MEARS, A8.5.
