Description

1908 London Summer Olympics Bronze Medal, Yachting. The London Games were originally scheduled in Naples, but a Mount Vesuvius eruption (the same volcano that buried Pompeii in AD 79) erupted on April 7, 1906, devastating the city of Naples. London was selected as the new venue. This bronze medal from the relocated Games is engraved on its edge "Second Prize, 15 Meter Yacht Race." This may seem like quite a short distance for such a race, but the measurement actually refers to the size of the vessel. Interestingly, there were no participants in this sailing class, so this medal went unclaimed. This medal would have been awarded to the crew of the second place finisher; the captain would have received a silver medal with "Second Prize" designation. The medal's obverse pictures a victorious athlete being crowned by with a laurel, and the words "Olympic Games, London 1908." Verso features a warrior on horseback and winged Victory. Medal is 1.25" diameter, in fine condition with minimal tarnishing
