Description

1920 Walter Hagen Metropolitan Championship Gold Medal. This year marked the third consecutive win for "The Haig" in this important event. He also won in 1916 and 1919 (due to World War I there was no tournament held in 1917 or 1918). The tournament was held at Greenwich Country Club in Connecticut. Hagen won in a playoff over Long Jim Barnes with a 70 to Barnes' 74.

The medal is uninscribed on the back but it is well documented as Hagen's, with the front stating "Metropolitan Golf Association, 13th Open Championship 1920." This medal was bought at auction in 1990, having been consigned by the Hagen family to Sporting Antiquities annual auction, Lot #304. The fourteen karat gold medal measures just over 1.25" in diameter and weighs thirty-four grams. Excellent condition. Lot derives from the Philadelphia Private Golf Museum.
