Description
1915 Lynnewood Hall Cup Awarded to Jerry Travers. Since 1901, the Lynnewood Hall Challenge Cup has been synonymous with prestige. It is the second-oldest amateur competition in the country, behind only the U.S. Amateur. In the years preceding World War II, the tournament was considered one of America's premier invitationals. The tournament is held at Huntingdon Valley country club in the Philadelphia suburbs, and is named after the county seat of the Joseph E. Widener family, a club founder.In 1915, the Lynnewood Hall Challenge Cup was won by World Golf Hall of Fame member Jerome Travers. The diminutive Travers (5 feet, 7 inches and 140 pounds), in a nine-year stretch from 1906 to 1915, won four U.S. Amateurs, five Metropolitan Amateurs, and a U. S. Open, also in 1915. His championship career ended abruptly at age 28. In his time, he was the best match player in the U.S. and one of the greatest U.S. Amateurs of all time. He beat the records of all of those who had come before him.
The cup is a masterwork of silversmithing, its ornate structure standing ten inches in height, and measuring about eleven inches in diameter, inclusive of the width of the three handles. Each area between the handles is engraved with details of the competition, as follows:

Tarnishing and a few indistinct dents are apparent, but the trophy cup presents very well and retains every last ounce of historical and aesthetic appeal. Lot derives from the Philadelphia Private Golf Museum. Letter of provenance from Travers family.
