Description

Circa 1985 Michael Jordan Personally Owned McDonald's All-America Jersey. Fascinating rookie-era jersey leaves plenty of questions unanswered, but let's first concentrate upon what we do know. Our consignor was part of a Chicago-based moving crew tasked with the relocation of MJ's belongings, a project overseen by his mother Deloris. According to our consignor's letter of provenance, "...Mrs. Jordan stated that there was too much stuff, and, as a tip, we could select a few pieces Michael did not want. Among the pieces I selected was this McDonald's jersey."

We delivered the jersey to Sports Investors Authentication for their photo matching services, but they were unable to locate an exact match. Our online listing presents an image of Jordan wearing a virtually identical jersey, but SIA was able to determine that it is not the same as the listed garment, instead likely a back-up for the one in the image. We'd have to assume this photograph was taken during the filming of a commercial for the fast food brand, although we haven't located that footage.

"McDonald's, 23, All-America" is screened across the chest of the blue mesh body in red and white, matching the jersey trim and presenting a distinctly patriotic theme. "Jordan" is screened in white across shoulders on verso, above another two-toned number "23." Lower left front tail holds "Champion [size] XL" label with a "4 Extra Length" secondary tag anchored at lower stitching path. This is a strong indicator of authenticity--even though this jersey style was never available to the general public, that tailoring modifier greatly strengthens the Jordan association. Minimal to zero wear is to be expected for the purposes, and the autograph on rear numeral that our consignor discusses in his letter--acquired in person about a year after Jordan's move--has unfortunately since become an unrecognizable blur. But, again, a rookie-era Jordan basketball jersey is a treasure every day of the year, and Platinum Night is no exception. Letter of provenance from consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
