Description

1990 Team Canada International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship Gold Medal - First Hockey is a religion in Canada. From their earliest days, kids are on the ice learning to skate and hitting pucks into the net. In 1990, the International Ice Hockey Federation had its first Women's World Championship at the Civic Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. The tournament was a test event for the International Olympic Committee to see if the women's sport would be popular enough as an international event capable of attracting a sizable audience. While the early crowd sizes were sparse (estimated at 100), the tourney proved successful. The gold medal game had an attendance of 8,840. The committee was convinced women's hockey would sell to audiences nationwide. The host country ended up earning gold as it downed the United States 5-2 in the final.

This gold medal (2.75" diameter) was presented to a high ranking official from Team Canada. The front has "World Champions" along with imagery of hockey players and "Women" raised. An image of the world is centered on the reverse along with "International Hockey Federation." A yellow and blue ribbon is present. Light wear.
