Description

1927 Lou Gehrig Eyes Original News Photograph by Acme Newspictures, PSA/DNA Type 1. We don't know if Charles Conlon or the photographer who snapped this shot had the idea first, but a pair of Gehrig ultra-close-ups was released during the glorious Murderers' Row season of 1927. The American League MVP's visor throws a shadow over most of his face, and a photo editor has darkened the lids and the pupils to give the Iron Horse an almost feline look. In raking light we can see straight-edged lines forming a rectangle around just the eyes, although that effect (and some vertical wrinkling at center) are just about impossible to see when viewed head on.

Borderless image measures approximately 5.75x8" and paper caption on back reports that Gehrig and Ruth are tied at twenty-four home runs, which they indeed were for a couple days in late June of 1927. Date stamp from a couple weeks later appears nearby, along with some penciled notations. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, Type 1.
