Description

A gorgeous gamer from a St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Famer!

1940 Johnny "Pepper" Martin Game Worn St. Louis Cardinals Jersey, SGC Superior/Excellent. They called him "The Wild Horse of the Osage" for his aggressive baserunning and his southeastern Oklahoma upbringing, of which he remarked, "Once you start runnin' out there, there ain't nothin' to stop you." Today Martin is best remembered for his heroic contributions to the Cards' 1931 World Series victory in which he set a Fall Classic record of twelve hits, batting an outrageous .500 as the rest of his team wallowed just above the Mendoza Line.

This jersey finds Martin near the end of his thirteen seasons of service to the Cardinals--he'd return at age forty in 1944 for forty games as the Majors struggled to fill the talent gap opened by the Second World War. He batted a career-best .316 in the 1940 season from which this gorgeous garment derives.

While there are no year markings in the jersey, the vintage can be determined by the zipper front, which debuted in the Cardinals wardrobe in 1939, and the absence of a Centennial patch or any evidence of its removal. The 1944 home jerseys had buttons, and a sleeve patch, leaving 1940 as the only possibility. We have always loved this chenille birds and bat logo across the chest, and the wide soutache that winds its way around the cuffs, collar and zipper path. Number "11" is applied to verso in red-on-navy felt. A delightful full name "Pepper Martin" is embroidered in red directly into lower right front tail.

Interior collar holds local "Rawlings St. Louis" label with size "46" subtag at left. Game wear is assessed as "moderate," as to be expected for Martin's eighty-six appearances that year. Condition is well within acceptable bounds, with some foxing and separation at the satin collar lining, a hole about the size of a cigarette burn at rear midsection, and general age-toning. But the glorious aesthetics of this celebrated jersey style shine through these minor faults. A marvelous showpiece begging for mannequin display. LOA from SGC Superior/Excellent.
