Hands of stone!

1983 Roberto Duran WBC World Lightweight Championship Commemorative Belt. They had met four years earlier in Panama City to compete for the WBA World Lightweight, and Esteban De Jesus had dropped Duran in the first round before the "Hands of Stone" returned the favor in the seventh and again in the eleventh with a flurry that left De Jesus unable to rise before the count of ten. Their Las Vegas rematch on January 21, 1978 supplied a national television audience with another thriller that took twelve rounds before referee Buddy Basilico stepped in to rescue the bloody De Jesus and identify Duran as the Lightweight Champion of the World Boxing Council.

Presented is a belt recalling that Caesar's Palace extravaganza in which Duran became the undisputed and lineal Lightweight Champion, the last title he'd earn in that weight class before stepping up to Welterweight en route to belts in four divisions. It was issued to Duran in 1983 as the WBC celebrated its twentieth anniversary with all of the living past and present titleholders in attendance--Ali, Frazier, Leonard, Arguello and Duran among them--each of whom received a commemorative belt like this one. The specimen demonstrates considerable wear and loss of some of the original enameling of the center design. Relief images of Joe Louis and Ali flank the central piece.

Verso bears the signature of the president of the WBC and various handwritten notations, presumably in Duran's hand. The main text translates to, "The Greatest Lightweight." We interpret the other text to relate primarily to various boxing sanctioning bodies--"Fecarbox" is Central American, for example. A small slab of adhesive velcro suggests time spent in a mounted display, but we'll leave it up to the winning bidder to decide whether to remove it--an easy task if desired.

Our Panamanian consignor acquired the belt directly from Duran, and he supplies a letter of provenance attesting to the fact. He assures us that Duran is aware of the impending auction and has no objections. A spectacular artifact from the man listed at number twenty-eight in the Ring Magazine ranking of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time. Letter of provenance from consignor.
