1969 New York Jets vs. Baltimore Colts Super Bowl III Original
Painting by LeRoy Neiman. The high-impact drama of professional
football has always seemed to us the most fitting subject for the
bold expressionistic style of the most celebrated sports artist of
all time, and he delivers the goods in this magnificent acrylic on
board that once belonged to one of the subjects of the work, Jets
defensive tackle Gerry Philbin. While Neiman takes some liberties
with the design, picturing Philbin wearing a green jersey rather
than the white the wore to face the Baltimore Colts in 1969, this
is unquestionably a Super Bowl III image as these two teams met
only in that iconic NFL Championship showdown during that era.Philbin wrestles Colts running back Tom Matte to the turf in this image, and it was Matte who led all Colts in the third edition of the Super Bowl in total yardage with 116 on the ground and another thirty through the air. The pair of championship combatants are rendered in the classic Neiman style with daring palette choices and thick paint application. The image area is 22x36", with a simple frame adding a couple inches to each dimension. Neiman signs and dates the work at lower right. There are no apparent condition issues, as our high-resolution online imagery should confirm.
A massive inscription on verso appears in 9/10 black sharpie, reading, "Painted in commemoration of the 1969 'Super Bowl' victory, Gerry Philbin #81." Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
