1991 Chicago Bulls NBA Championship Ring Presented to Shooting
Guard Craig Hodges. Championships are like love--there nothing
quite like the first. As every basketball fan is aware--and
virtually every human after the recent airing of the massively
popular "Last Dance" documentary--the Chicago Bulls would claim six
rings during the 1990's, led through that era of supreme domination
by the greatest player of them all, Michael Jordan.Craig Hodges' ten-season NBA career would end after the Bulls' second trip to the sport's mountain top in 1992, and he'd appear in every game of the first successful playoff run the offered ring symbolizes. That first championship is best remembered today for the photograph of a weeping Michael Jordan cradling the Larry O'Brien Trophy after an NBA Finals-clinching Game Five victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Hodges would contribute eighty points to the 1990-91 Chicago Bulls playoff tallies, the last five coming in the clincher, draining his only three-point attempt of the game in the process. Today, the three-pointer remains Hodges primary claim to fame (beyond his participation in the legendary Bulls dynasty). He led the league three times in shooting percentage from beyond the arc, and joins Larry Bird as one of only two players in NBA history to win three consecutive Three Point Contests at the NBA All-Star Weekend. And not even Bird himself could match Hodges' staggering nineteen-in-a-row within that competition, a record set in 1991 that stands to this day.
The presentation of this ring at this particular moment in history is noteworthy for more than just the recent "Last Dance" documentary, as Hodges famously filed a $40 million lawsuit against the NBA in 1996 claiming he had been blackballed from the league as punishment for his association with Louis Farrakhan and his criticism of fellow black players, including Jordan, for their lack of political activism. Hodges wore a dashiki while part of the 1992 Bulls' visit to the White House, delivering to President George H.W. Bush a handwritten letter expressing criticism of his policies regarding minorities and the poor. He'd never play another NBA game.
This first ring may be our favorite style of the half-dozen Bulls models that exist, featuring a golden logo and "Bulls" text set against a black stone on the face. Thirty genuine diamonds run the perimeter. Left shank bears Hodges' surname and jersey number, framing a miniature Larry O'Brien Trophy and the Bulls' regular season record. The left shank reads "World Champions 1991" with the NBA logo and the Bulls' postseason record. Interior band is stamped "14K Jostens" and measures to a size nine (9). Weight is forty-three grams (43 g.). Condition is spectacular, presented inside its matching, personalized wooden display case.
