Description
1924 Helen Wills U.S. Open Mixed Doubles Winner's Medal. Vincent Richards, the number two seed in the Men's Singles division and winner of two Gold Medals in the 1924 Paris Olympics, partnered with Ms. Wills to author a thoroughly dominant Mixed Doubles victory at this 1924 edition of the U.S. Open. Their victims in the Finals were fellow Americans Molla Bjurstedt Mallory and the legendary Bill Tilden, the most decorated tennis star of the Golden Age of Sport. Presented is Ms. Wills' victor's prize from the tournament that concluded with that historic match. It remains housed in its original "Black, Starr & Frost" hinged case, the local New York City jewelers who supplied the Big Apple-based tournament with victor's prizes. An inch and a half diameter medallion is affixed to a moderately worn colored ribbon, the glimmering metal stamped with an image of an eagle soaring from a base of laurels, a flag and crossed tennis racquets. Raised text announces "United States Lawn Tennis Association."
Reverse is engraved, "National Championship Mixed Doubles Longwood 1924 Winners." Stamped near the lower edge of verso is "14K," denoting gold quality.
