Description
The earliest and rarest of all DiMaggio cards!
Signed 1935 Pebble Beach Joe DiMaggio PSA VG 3, PSA/DNA Auto
10. We all know the famous song, but in 1936 the roles were
reversed, as the heart of San Francisco left the city for a new
home at the other edge of the North American continent. One can
only imagine the gut punch to fans of that city's Pacific Coast
League franchise, who had watched their young outfielder positively
demolish all competition in 1935 with a .398 batting average,
thirty-four home runs, forty-eight doubles, eighteen triples, 154
runs batted in and 173 runs scored. There was zero suspense when
the committee from The Sporting News announced the MVP of the PCL,
no close second in the balloting. This rare regional trading card capitalized upon the popularity of the dominant team (and, in this case, player) of the west coast's leading minor league, and this Platinum Night auction presents several signed examples thereof. Certainly it goes without saying that this is the key card in the scarce issue, believed to be the very first released with live autographs from the subjects. This is one of only four DiMaggio representations in the PSA population, making it far and away the rarest of all cardboard commemoratives dedicated to this American icon. Only nineteen Pebble Beach Clothiers cards have been slabbed by the hobby's leading card grading service for all subjects.
Our catalog imagery should confirm our opinion that the card itself presents considerably better than its technical VG 3 assessment, and that the perfect 10 rating for the early DiMaggio autograph is fully justified. The rarity, significance and dazzling aesthetics of this one should bring out the most competitive of pre-war trading card collectors.
