1961-62 Fleer Basketball Wax Box with Twenty-Four Unopened
Packs. A sixty-year-old virgin! Unless you've been lost for
decades in an attic somewhere, like the offered relic, you're
surely aware that unopened wax has been one of the market's top
performers, an enduring bull market which exhibits no signs of
slowing. Most collectors are satisfied simply by the mystery of
endless possibility contained within the ancient seals, while those
more daring hobbyists throw open the vault doors and send the
contents off for slabbing.It will be particularly difficult to resist that urge in this case, as the 1961 Fleer Basketball series is so choked with hardcourt legends that no fewer than thirty-five of the set's sixty-six entries fall under the heading of "star card" in SMR price guides. Particularly thrilling are the high odds of discovering the rookie cards of iconic names like Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Elgin Baylor and Jerry West. In fact, Steve Hart confirms in his included letter that three of the packs definitely feature a legend on top: Wilt Chamberlain #8, Wilt Chamberlain in Action #47, and Elgin Baylor #3.
Simple mathematics tells us that there are 144 cards contained within the twenty-four packs of six, resulting in the probability of two examples of each member of the set's full roster. PSA Mint 9 representations of many of the stars are solidly in the five-figure range, as are some of the common Gem Mint 10's. A veritable fortune could reside within, leaving the box's new owner faced with Dirty Harry's timeless query.
