Description

C. 1887 New Orleans Pelicans Team Cabinet Photo SGC 40 VG 3. Offered is an immensely rare 19th Century team cabinet card of the New Orleans Pelicans of the Southern League from their inaugural season. This the earliest known team cabinet of a Southern League team. The team was founded in 1887 and became part of the Southern Association in 1901 and remained so until it folded in 1961. Its most famous alumni from 1910 is Shoeless Shoe Jackson. Members of this squad include John Ewing, Shorty Fuller, Bill Geiss, Ed Cartwright, Mgr. Breman, Count Campau, Bill Klusman, Farmer Vaughn. The 4-1/4" x 6-1/2" cabinet has barely aged a day, showing minor wear at corners and surface spot staining on the reverse and some mild soiling in the lower left. The distinctive "Souby logo and "119 Canal Street, NEW ORLEANS" address stamp adorns the lower portion of the card mount. Aside from a slight rough cut about of about a half-inch long, the 13-player portrait area is immaculate. Graded SGC 40 VG 3. This beautiful and so very rare collectible from a league where little remains presents near-mint. We have been unable to find another example of a New Orleans team card from this era.
