Description

Population eight, six superior!

1934 Goudey Lou Gehrig #37 SGC 88 NM/MT 8. Lou Gehrig was once quoted as saying, "I'm not a headline guy. I know that as long as I was following Ruth to the plate I could have stood on my head and no one would have known the difference." He couldn't have been more wrong. The same historic season the Babe knocked out sixty, Gehrig put forty-seven souvenirs into the seats and claimed the American League MVP Award. By the 1934 season, the Yankee balance of power had completed its shift, with Gehrig doubling the Babe's offensive production in homers and runs batted in. When the Goudey Gum Company reached out to Christy Walsh to sign one of his players to an endorsement deal, it wasn't Ruth they wanted. It was Gehrig.

The card featuring the handsome mug of the stalwart first baseman is, of course, the most desirable in of the ninety-six subjects in Goudey's sophomore baseball issue, and this is one of the finest examples thereof. The card is as bright as a new hatchling from its wax cocoon, sharply registered and clean as a whistle on front and verso. Only the lightest corner touches and slightly imperfect centering block a climb further up the grading ladder, where prices increase exponentially. A gorgeous specimen from Gehrig's fabled Triple Crown season!
