Description

The only known example!

1934 Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig Tour of Japan Bromide (JBR 72) Baseball Card SGC NM 7. It's nothing short of miraculous that this singularly unique survivor crossed an ocean of time of salt water to arrive in our Dallas world headquarters in 2022 virtually unchanged from its production during the fabled 1934 Tour of Japan, a treasure of the Orient that would quicken the pulse even if it did show the effects of Father Time's rough hands. Surely any collector willing to compete for this important relic will need no primer on the history of this most famous of international baseball barnstorming excursions, but for the more casual baseball fan we'll note that this trans-Pacific tour carried six Hall of Famers--Connie Mack, Lefty Gomez, Charlie Gehringer, Jimmy Foxx and the two Yankee legends pictured in this Japanese bromide baseball card. It's considered the most consequential event in popularizing our national pastime abroad.

The few members of our clientele familiar with this supreme rarity will know that this issue was produced with facsimile signatures, so it's important to make it clear to all that the gorgeous Babe Ruth signature angling across the lower third of the bromide is part of the printing process and was not applied by the Bambino himself. Upon first glance, we were sure this was a signed photo, but it's only upon close inspection of the flawless, glossy surface of the bromide that we see there is no imprint of a writing utensil in the unspoiled flatness of the piece. Back is blank. Arguably the rarest Ruth/Gehrig piece on the face of the Earth, this relic should help identify the most serious collector of these Yankee icons on Platinum Night. SGC NM 7.
