Only four examples at any grade in PSA population!
1917 Boston Store Babe Ruth #147 PSA VG 3. Though the Babe
reigns supreme on the Mount Rushmore of Yankeedom (along with Lou
Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle and Derek Jeter), he's the only
member of that brotherhood who didn't dedicate the entirety of his
Major League playing career to the franchise, famously "cursing"
his debut team as the Dead Ball Era went Live. Just a tiny fraction
of all surviving period Ruth artifacts derive from those early Red
Sox years, always commanding a premium despite the fierce rivalry
that leaves fans of both teams highly allergic to virtually all
other material bearing the wrong hallmark.Upon first glance, many will mistake this obverse image for the one that appears on Ruth's famous Sporting News rookie card, but it's a different pose that was almost certainly captured during the same photo shoot. The card was issued in 1917 by Boston Store, which one might naturally assume was located in the Red Sox' hometown but was actually several hundred miles west where the city's American League socks were white. This was a huge year for that Chicago White Sox team, of course, their last World Series Championship until 2005.
That limited regional distribution has made the 1916 Ruth rookies look downright common by comparison, as this is one of only four examples at any grade appearing in a PSA slab. Points are lost to the edge and corner wear endemic to virtually all cardboard of this advanced vintage, as the image is masterfully rendered and marvelously centered. This is our first offering of the 1917 Boston Store Babe Ruth, and very possibly our last. Graded PSA VG 3.
