Description

1886 Virginia Brights Black Stocking Nine Imperial Cabinet Photo. The offered imperial sized cabinet card of a "Black Stocking Nine" pitcher is one of about a half dozen we are aware of to be offered for auction. Your attention can't help but be impressed by the huge 7-1/2" x 13" card mount with a 7" x 10-3/4" central image that offers great detail and wide scale of contrast. An advertisement for "Virginia Brights Cigarettes" is clearly visible and developed right into the photo. The "Allen & Ginter's VIRGINIA BRIGHTS CIGARETTES. Hand made - Crop of 1884" ad copy is dark and bold. The tan-colored mount has a bevel edge and has a series of eight small pin holes but is otherwise in close to excellent condition. The photo shows minor surface soiling but little else in terms or wear with no damage other than by four of the already mentioned pin holes. The Black Stocking Nine series is truly one of the only sources of women playing baseball from the 19th century.
