Description
1968 A&BC Gum "Superman In The Jungle" Empty Retail Test Box. Superman really got around. Born on Krypton, grew up in the mid-west and moved to the big city. It seems he spent some time in the jungle. The first Man of Steel card set was made in 1940 by Gum, Inc. It is now a non-sports staple with a passionate following. In 1968, despite being a social icon a series called "Superman in the Jungle" was proposed that never came out of the test stage and are quite scarce today. Most known cards are blank backed proofs.The 66 cards featured color drawings and there was a 16 card puzzle which are particularly rare. Obviously the idea didn't go over well with Superman fans at the time but one plus was the display box that was proposed, believed to be the work of the great Norm Saunders, who also did the inks for the cards. The scene featuring Superman fighting the King of The Jungle is colorful, detailed and makes for one of the coolest boxes ever produced. A failure for the US market meant Topps sold the rights to the set to A&BC Gum in Britain. Our example is in fantastic condition which presents close to the near-mint level except for one area of surface loss to a side panel. This is the first time Heritage Sports Auctions has offered this box to our bidders. There can't be very many of these in collector hands.
