1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal 150/649 Overprint Christy Mathewson (White Cap) PSA Mint 9 - Pop Two, None Higher! Mathewson stands as a defining figure of the sport's Dead Ball Era as much as he stands in contrast to it. In that rough and tumble period of our national pastime, when the sport was populated by brawling drunks and illiterate farmhands, Matty was recognized almost as much for his gentlemanly comportment as he was for his remarkable Hall of Fame abilities. His utter pitching supremacy is evident in his eye-popping record of 373-188--a nearly two-to-one ratio of success--and a career earned run average of just 2.13.An essential component in five National League Championship seasons for the New York Giants, Matty is captured at the heart of that age of dominance in this soulful portrait variant from the hobby's most important tobacco issue. Already one of just two examples sharing the highest rung of the grading ladder, this spectacular specimen is further elevated by a scarce factory 649 caption and overprint strip on verso.
Masterful print work results in flawless color and registration and spectacular centering. Corners are sharp, and surfaces clean. It's unquestionably one of the most well-preserved tobacco cards in the hobby.
